What inspired you to start writing the Felicity Brady?
Years ago, I had a bookshop, but sadly not too
many customers, so I stared to write a children’s novel. My shop was ‘Down some steps, below a crumbling bridge’ and this is the first line of the
first book, Galibrath’s Will. When I had finished
the first paragraph, I remember thinking
‘Yep, that’s okay’, so I kept on going.
Where do you get all the ideas from?
My best ideas always seem to pop up when I’m in the car chatting to my wife or walking in the middle of a forest, so I always keep a scrap of paper and a pen in my pocket. If I try to think of a name
for a character or a magical land when
I’m sitting in front of the computer,
I usually end up
twiddling my thumbs.
What is the most difficult
part of writing a set of novels?
To keep going! When there’s a hundred normal, boring jobs to do and writing is
the last thing on the list. Then, when you finally get to it, it’s almost midnight
and you feel exhausted.
Is Felicity Brady based on anybody?
Felicity is a wonderful girl, full of fun and often a little cheeky. She can also be a bit difficult. So I guess she’s based on my wife! Oddly (or maybe not) she, my wife, walked into my shop the very week I began writing Galibrath’s Will.
